Toyota's FT-Se sports car concept protects the body from G-forces

Toyota has offered a new look at the future of its sports cars with the reveal of the all-electric FT-Se concept, shown for the first time at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show

While Toyota is one of the few manufacturers without concrete plans to axe internal combustion entirely, it still has its sights set on a heavily electrified future, with the marque previewing 11 future EV models in a roadmap outlined in 2021. The striking Sports EV concept was one of them, and we've now been given a look the latest iteration of that vision at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show.

Named the ‘FT-Se’, this latest Toyota all-electric sports car concept references the iconic mid-engined proportions of the MR2, with Gazoo Racing development making it an intriguing proposition for drivers. Details on what lies under its skin are few and far between at this stage, but Toyota says the FT-Se has been designed with stability and strong aerodynamic performance in mind. Its ‘next-generation’ cockpit features a yoke-style steering wheel and numerous driver-oriented displays, mounted for optimum outward visibility – while it’s unclear exactly what this will entail, Toyota also says the FT-Se will ‘grow with the driver through software updates.’

Performance figures haven’t been disclosed just yet, but curiously, the FT-Se features unique cell-like mesh structures in the cabin to protect occupants from G-forces, something that might offer some indication as to the level of performance on offer. Striking carbonfibre Recaro bucket seats also make its focus clear, as does plenty of Alcantara and matte-finish carbonfibre trim throughout.

Referencing its new concept models shown in Tokyo, Toyota said: ‘Together with highly responsive controls and captivating designs that are unique to BEVs, these models will evolve into one-of-a-kind vehicles that owners will cherish. They will offer the pleasure of a personal, customised ride and convenience functions such as the ability to browse local area information while on board.’

The model has launched alongside the new FT-3e SUV concept, a model that the sports car is said to share major components with. While of less interest for keen drivers, this model features exterior digital displays to present information on the state of charge, interior temperature and air quality for the driver on approach.

Further details on both models will come in due course.
