£1.4m Ford GT Mk IV launched as hardcore final edition

Ford’s supercar bows out with a track-only homage to its Le Mans-winning ancestor

After six years in production, Ford Performance and Multimatic have unveiled the final iteration of the Ford GT, and it’s the most focused one yet. Limited to just 67 units, the track-only model pays homage to the 1967 GT Mk IV racer that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, and will cost from $1.7m (£1.4m). Each example will be built at Multimatic’s Ontario facility, with first deliveries set to commence in spring 2023.

The limited-run GT Mk II of 2019 was the first track-only iteration, but unlike that car, the Mk IV ditches the road car’s powertrain for an entirely unique engine and transmission. Specifics are yet to be disclosed, but a larger displacement version of its twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 is said to produce in excess of 789bhp, paired to a new ‘racing gearbox’ – for reference, the previous GT Mk II produced 700bhp and featured the standard seven-speed dual-clutch unit.

What’s most notable, though, is the use of a completely new chassis, now lengthened for an increase in wheelbase, improved aerodynamics and overall performance. Multimatic is also applying its trick Adaptive Spool Valve (ASV) suspension, which should make it an even stronger performer on track.

Like the car that inspired it, the new model adopts bespoke bodywork designed with aerodynamics in mind – unlike previous limited editions, the Mk IV ditches the road car's bodywork almost entirely. At the front, those large, dual air outlets are swapped for a central, slatted unit, with the headlights completely redesigned for a more modern look. Though the trademark flying buttresses remain, the Mk IV adopts a much more sculpted aesthetic, with aero-disc wheels and its ‘long tail’ rear giving it a striking silhouette.

Larry Holt, executive vice president at Multimatic Special Vehicle Operations Group said: ‘A unique larger displacement engine, proper racing gearbox, stretched wheelbase and truly radical body has resulted in an unprecedented level of performance. We are proud to have been a part of the third-generation GT from its inception to this amazing swansong and consider it a significant chapter in Multimatic’s history.’
